If you want color, drama, and beauty in your home without the fuss of a demanding plant, the Aglaonema — Chinese Evergreen — is your answer. This extraordinary genus offers one of the widest color ranges of any foliage plant on earth: deep forest green with silver markings, vivid hot pink with green edges, rich red with dark green borders, creamy white and pale green, emerald with pale midribs. Every variety is a different work of art. And every single one is remarkably easy to grow.
The Aglaonema has been a beloved indoor plant for decades — and for good reason. It tolerates low light, adapts to a wide range of conditions, and rewards even the most casual care with lush, colorful foliage that transforms any room. In South Florida’s warm climate, it thrives with particular enthusiasm.

Styling Your Aglaonema
- Color accent — a vivid pink or red Aglaonema like the Etta Rose or Crosby’s Christmas adds a bold pop of color to any room — the kind of color that a throw pillow tries to achieve but a living plant does effortlessly
- Low-light hero — the Aglaonema is one of the best plants for darker corners and rooms with limited natural light. The green varieties in particular thrive where other plants struggle
- Desk companion — a smaller Aglaonema on a desk or side table brings color and life to a workspace without demanding attention or bright light
- Bathroom beauty — the Aglaonema loves humidity and tolerates lower light, making it one of the best bathroom plants. The steam keeps it lush and the colors vivid
- Grouped collection — a collection of different Aglaonema varieties together creates a breathtaking tapestry of color — greens, pinks, reds, silvers — each plant a different palette
- Bedroom color — a pink or red Aglaonema in a bedroom brings warmth and life without the demanding care of flowering plants
Care Guide
Light: The Aglaonema’s light needs vary by variety. Green varieties with silver markings are the most tolerant of low light and can thrive in quite dim conditions. Pink, red, and highly variegated varieties need more light to maintain their vivid colors — bright indirect light is ideal for these. All varieties should avoid harsh direct sun which will scorch the leaves.
Watering: Water when the top inch or two of soil is dry — typically every 7-10 days in summer, every 2 weeks in winter. The Aglaonema tolerates occasional underwatering but dislikes sitting in wet soil. Always ensure good drainage.
Humidity: The Aglaonema appreciates humidity but is more tolerant of dry air than many tropical plants. In South Florida’s naturally humid climate it is very happy. Indoors in air conditioning, occasional misting is appreciated but not essential.
Fertilizing: Feed monthly from March through September with a balanced liquid fertilizer. A well-fed Aglaonema in good light grows rapidly and the colors are at their most vivid.
Temperature: The Aglaonema loves warmth and is perfectly suited to South Florida’s climate. Keep above 60°F and away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents.
Common Issues & Easy Fixes
- Brown leaf tips — low humidity, inconsistent watering, or fluoride in tap water. Increase humidity, water more consistently, and switch to filtered water
- Yellow leaves — usually overwatering. Let soil dry more between waterings and ensure good drainage
- Faded, pale colors — insufficient light, especially for pink and red varieties. Move to a brighter location with more indirect light
- Leggy, sparse growth — not enough light. Move to a brighter spot and start a regular fertilizing routine
- Brown patches on leaves — cold damage or direct sun. Move away from cold drafts and out of direct sunlight
